In the 1700's, 29 grants of land were issued and settler John Milledge established a plantation at Modena. His son John Jr. became a U.S. Representative and Senator, Governor of Georgia and founder of the University of Georgia then called Franklin College. In 1968, Brooklyn Bridge engineer Robert C. Roebling donated over 500 acres of Modena Plantation to the state of Georgia for the establishment of a marine research institution now known as the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and the University of Georgia's Marine Extension Center.

This prestigious residential community now called Modena is relatively small with only 50 homesites, each about an acre in size, and a handful of homes already in place. With the few remaining lots, you can own some of the last remaining pieces of waterfront history. Enjoy the view of the Intracoastal Waterway, natural tidal creeks, salt marshes, live oaks, and Spanish moss. You'll never want to leave this island paradise. For your convenience, the Village Center is just 4 miles down McWhorter Road and offers a variety of stores and shops with personalized services too many to mention.
