CCA SEMINAR – MAY 14:Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary

You won’t want to miss this CCA Seminar on Monday, May 14, 7:00 PM, at St.Peters Church in The Village

Dr. George Sedberry, Superintendent, Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, will discuss “Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary: Research and Management to Protect an Ocean Treasure.”

Gray’s Reef, off Georgia’s coast, was designated a National Marine Sanctuary more than three decades ago by President Jimmy Carter.  It is one of the largest shallow-water, live-bottom reefs between Cape Hatteras and Cape Canaveral and is one of the few protected areas along the east coast.  Sanctuary designation has afforded protection to a rich array of marine life such as corals, sponges, lobsters and starfish while allowing fishing with minimal impact on the 22 sq. mile sanctuary.  A few years ago, the southern third of the reef was designated a research area where scientists can study the impact of human activity on the ecosystem.  The research area is off-limits to fishing but the remaining two-thirds is not, although special regulations do apply.

Dr. George Sedberry joined Gray’s Reef as Superintendent in 2007.  He holds a PhD in Marine Science from William and Mary and has conducted research on hard bottom reefs in the US as well as protected marine areas in Belize and Madeira and has studied fish populations in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and Pacific waters.  He is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston, the University of South Carolina, the University of New England and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography.  He has authored more than 80 scientific publications on marine fisheries and ecosystems.

Special Free Trip Raffle:  Anyone attending the seminar may participate in a free raffle to win a day aboard the “Nancy Foster” (or another research vessel) accompanying scientists and researchers on a trip to the reef.  The winner will have to be somewhat flexible regarding the date of the trip but this is a wonderful and unique opportunity to see marine science up close and personal.

SUMMER AT THE LANDINGS IS CHILD’S PLAY

The Landings offers an exciting lifestyle for residents of all ages, and in the summer when the temperature heats up, so do activity offerings for the children who reside at The Landings. With approximately 1,000 children under the age of 18, specialty summer camps have become a very popular attraction for parents and create an unforgettable experience for their kids.

The Landings Club’s specialty summer camps range in duration, price, subject and age. There is a camp for every personality and hobby, all led by experienced and highly-trained instructors. They help the children get the most out of their summer vacation and keep them interested and active all summer.

Some of the offerings, such as Junior Golf Camps, seem obvious considering The Landings has six championship golf courses. Head Golf Pro and Golf Digest’s “Top 40 under 40” Best Young Teacher 2010, Nicole Weller, will be leading the way with her exciting junior golf camps. Kids participate in sessions designed for their age group, from Teeny Tiny Tots (age 3) and Tiny Tots (age 4-6), to Juniors with divisions ranging from age 7 -17. “The Landings Junior Golf Camp is a wonderfully interactive and educational golf experience for youth ages 3-17,” said Nicole Weller. “Not only do participants learn basic skills like putting, chipping, pitching, full swing and bunker play, but they experience a rules and etiquette session that involves live hands-on props and a written rules challenge, numerous games and some special summer surprises that are aimed at cooling them off!”

With 34 tennis courts at The Landings, the Junior Tennis Academy is another popular choice for children age 5 and up. The 10 and under program uses smaller racquets, balls and courts to make the game much more fun and allow kids to be more successful. Junior players above age 10 use regulation balls, or low compression balls, depending on their level of play.

Summer swim lessons are conducted throughout the summer and other programs such as Dance and Cheer Camp, Strength & Conditioning (children will train like Olympians), and Junior Triathalon are other favorites.

The All Star Basketball Camp covers the basics of dribbling and passing, and the precision of proper shooting form in a fun-filled developmental camp. Football Camp, designed for children age 6 and up, will be conducted this year by formerUniversityofAlabama Offensive Lineman, Pat Boylan, and Soccer Camp led by High School Soccer Coach forSavannahCountryDay School, David Hooker, brings competition and fun to this summer’s soccer camp.

Summer at The Landings is the perfect time for Landings families, their children and grandchildren to learn an exciting sport from seasoned instructors in a healthy, fun environment. So when the temperature heats up, so does the fun!
