Rhodes 19 Update & The Leukemia Cup
Fellow Landings Sailors,
Things are getting serious here in Savannah! Our Landings Rhodes 19 group has three and one-third crews entered in the Leukemia Cup and today we chose which boats the crews would sail. Jake Master, Randy Nord and Alan Nicol will sail Yankee, Tito Perez, Anne Lyon and Carol Walsh will sail Dorothy's Slipper, and Joe Witten, Grace Palmer and I will sail Sinbad. The extra third? That would be Louise Herrick who has signed up to sail but is currently without company. HOW ABOUT IT? We need at least one more person to sail with Louise so we can enter a fourth boat. Remember, you need not be a member of the Landings Sailing Club to participate in this event.
Today's sailing was great. The Savannah sea breeze filled in right on schedule and Tito and Randy set a tight windward/leeward course. Yankee had its main halyard let loose before the start of the first race and didn't rejoin us until the second race had already begun. We had pretty close races after that with finishes in the second and fourth races that were settled by inches. In the fourth race Joe and I in Sinbad had a good start and pretty much had the advantage the whole way around...until the last 38 feet. After rounding the leeward mark, the preferred line was to go on port tack until just below the finish line, then tack to starboard to cross the line. I went a bit further than I needed to, allowing Randy (who was clear astern at the time) to tack at the same time. Now, with both boats on starboard tack and Randy the leeward boat we approached the X-mark. We were probably overlapped as we crossed the two-boat-length line, but I failed to ask for room at the mark and Randy, as leeward boat, called for me to yield to his line (which would have forced me into the mark). I did not yield, incurring Yankee's rightful scorn, and I concede first place to them. Tito researched the rule book after the race and it does appear that I could have called for room, but I didn't. Next time I'll yell everything I can think of.
We'll meet again at The Leukemia Cup! Well Done to all the sailors!

Don't forget...donations for The Leukemia Cup should be made out to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and delivered to me at 42 Islanders Retreat no later than Friday 19 Sept.
Think about joining us for the Regatta on 9/20...it's a great sail, a great party afterwards, and a great cause!
